FSC Millport were joined this week by students from the University of Strathclyde for a wealth of sessions in outdoor learning. Despite a little rain, the students threw themselves into exploring a range of different outdoor activities which will hopefully go on to enrich outdoor learning sessions in schools across Scotland. The Millport team introduced the students to trial these activities and encouraged different ways to incorporate subjects into the outdoor environment.
We shared ideas about how to encourage motivation in the inspiring surroundings of our outdoor classrooms when the weather is more challenging and introduced ways of connecting history, biology and geography in outdoor sessions by linking engaging activities with focus on context.
The session kicked off with the students trialing orienteering activities, using maps to find their way around the centre with some fun filled facts about renewable energy and ways to help our marine environment.
After a good breakfast, the following day allowed the group to explore the history in the town of Millport with a chance to delve into the stories of volcanoes, Vikings and Victorians. The lives of our Viking predecessors were brought to life as we experienced the challenges of living in a Viking dwelling and uncovered the secrets of their sustainability.
The afternoon was spent exploring the rocky shores of Farland point, gaining knowledge of the unique tidal zones and learning about our marine life and how each species is perfectly adapted to survive. Activities were introduced to explore energy flow and the stability of food webs. There was even time for a campfire under a sky full of stars. The perfect way to share stories and songs with the added bonus of homemade campfire bread and the odd toasted marshmallow. Or two…Or three.
The final morning introduced an array of activities to explore the art of teamwork with challenges to test everyone physically and mentally. These activities will explore approaches for motivating students to get the best out of their experience in outdoor activities and how to encourage individuals to review individual progression and learning.
